High winds cause dust storms, power outages; gusts top 70 mph
The National Weather Service has extended wind warnings into Tuesday morning, warning of gusts topping 80 mph.
The winds have reduced visibility in desert areas because of dust, and there have been reports of scattered power outages, including in Ventura County and the Palm Springs area. Fire officials were responding to a small brush fire in Saugus near Bouquet Canyon Road and Esquerra Road.
A SigAlert was issued on California 14 in Rosamond in Kern County because blowing dust was causing low visibility.
Wind gusts topped 70 mph in Lancaster and parts of Imperial County.
In the L.A. Basin, wind gusts could peak at 45 mph, said weather service meteorologist Andrew Rorke.
Gusts could climb to 60 mph in the San Fernando Valley foothills and in the Santa Clarita and Antelope valleys. Open ridgetops could experience winds of 80 to 90 mph, Rorke said.
The system will keep the region cooler through Tuesday before warmer weather takes hold Wednesday, pushing temperatures into the lower 80s. Until then, Angelenos can expect a couple of days of cloudy weather in the mid-70s and nights in the 40s and 50s, Rorke said.
High-surf advisories will be in effect until Wednesday, with waves between 7 and 9 feet and peaks up to 11 feet.
