$50,000 reward offered in 210 Freeway road-rage killing

A $50,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest in the fatal shooting of a man driving on the 210 Freeway in Sylmar during an apparent road-rage incident.

Sergio Sanchez, 35, was killed March 14 on the freeway near Hubbard Street; investigators believe his car also was struck by the assailant’s vehicle.

“Sergio was there for so many people while he was alive, now he needs someone to step up for him in death,” said L.A. City Councilman Felipe Fuentes, whose 7th District includes Sylmar, where Sanchez lived.

Fuentes said Sanchez was a hardworking man, driving home after his shift that night.

“Whoever shot him should face justice,” Fuentes said.

“Detectives have exhausted what few leads they had in this case,” said Lt. Paul Vernon. “We’re hoping this $50,000 will entice someone to come forward with information about Sergio Sanchez’s murder.”

Vernon said the shooting occurred as Sanchez was driving westbound along the freeway. Detectives estimate that somewhere near Hubbard Street, someone in a passing car or truck fired into Sanchez’s black Mitsubishi Eclipse, he said.

With Sanchez mortally wounded, his car came to a rest on the Roxford Street offramp, where passersby found him slumped over the steering wheel and flagged down a passing sheriff’s deputy.

Vernon said there were multiple impacts along the driver’s side, leading detectives to think the shooting was probably related to road rage. Traffic was light that night on the 210 Freeway, police said.
