Middle school locked down after student receives ‘puncture’ wound
A student at Sal Castro Middle School near downtown Los Angeles received a “puncture wound” in the back after apparent campus “horseplay,” officials said Wednesday afternoon.
The incident at the school, which is on the Belmont High School campus, forced a lockdown for about an hour, the Los Angeles Unified School District said.
The sixth-grade student was being treated Wednesday afternoon for injuries described as non-life-threatening, spokeswoman Monica Carazo said.
There was “no evidence of a fight or weapons,” she told The Times. “It was horseplay.”
The student was struck with a “sharp object,” but it was not a knife, according to Carazo.
School officials said there were no intruders on campus and that the incident involved students. School police responded and were interviewing students to piece together what transpired.
The lockdown lasted from about 2:15 p.m until classes ended at 3:15 p.m.
