San Fernando police officer fatally shoots man

A San Fernando Police Department officer shot and killed a man Tuesday afternoon in the northwest San Fernando Valley, officials said.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau will investigate the shooting, which occurred at 3:30 p.m. in the 800 block of South Brand Boulevard in the city of San Fernando.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, a mostly residential area just east of the 5 Freeway.

The Police Department said in a brief statement that all inquiries would be referred to the Sheriff’s Department.

No other information was immediately available.

San Fernando covers less than three square miles of the San Fernando Valley’s northwest corner, between Sylmar and Pacoima.

There have been at least 302 people killed in officer-involved shootings since 2007, according to The Times’ Homicide Report database.
