Pedestrian killed during police pursuit in Santa Ana
A short police pursuit and officer-involved shooting in Santa Ana ended Thursday afternoon shortly after suspects struck and killed a pedestrian with a car, police said.
Around 11:45 a.m., officers began pursuit of what they believed to be four armed suspects in a white compact car, according to Santa Ana police spokesman Anthony Bertagna. The pursuit began in the 1000 block of Central Avenue, when one of the four suspects got out of the vehicle and authorities said the officer-involved shooting occurred.
Bertagna said the circumstances surrounding the shooting were unclear. It was not immediately known if the suspect was injured or taken into custody. Authorities said the officer opened fire because the suspect was believed to be armed.
Meanwhile, Bertagna said the pursuit continued south and ended near the corner of MacArthur Boulevard and Flower Street where the three remaining suspects hit, and fatally injured, a pedestrian with their car. Bertagna said no details about the pedestrian were immediately available.
The suspects then got out of the vehicle as police set up a perimeter in the area, Bertagna said. One suspect was located by a police dog, one was stunned with a taser and one surrendered to police. All three were in custody Thursday afternoon, Bertagna said.
