Santa Monica shootings: Wounded woman released from hospital
A woman who was wounded in the Santa Monica shooting rampage last week has been released from Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, hospital officials said.
Debra Fine, who suffered four bullet wounds, was released in good condition Saturday evening, the hospital said in a statement Sunday.
Fine, in an earlier interview with Fox News from her hospital bed, said she crashed her car and played dead after bullets grazed her shoulder, hoping to avoid further contact with the gunman.
The gunman’s shooting spree Friday that left five victims dead was a premeditated act by an emotionally troubled person who armed himself with high-powered weapons, police said.
Authorities have not officially named the gunman, who was killed by police. But law enforcement sources in Washington and Los Angeles identified him as John Zawahri, 23. Several of the sources said Zawahri had a history of mental-health issues.
Police said the gunman’s rampage lasted about 10 minutes, beginning just before noon Friday at a Yorkshire Avenue home that was set on fire. Inside, authorities found the shooter’s father, Sammir Zawahri, 55, and his brother, Chris, 25, dead.
The gunman then cut a bloody path through the city’s normally quiet streets before ending up on the Santa Monica College campus, where he shot three people. Carlos Navarro Franco, 68, a groundskeeper at the college, died at the scene. His daughter, Marcela, 26, died from her wounds Sunday at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.
Franco and his daughter, who had recently signed up for summer school classes at the college, were driving to the school when Zawahri opened fire on their vehicle, police said.
An unidentified woman was also slain outside the college library.
Police caught up with John Zawahri at the library, killing him in a shootout.
Police later said he was armed himself with high-powered weapons and may have had up to 1,300 rounds of ammunition.
