San Diego County wildfire burns 2,500 acres, evacuations remain
Firefighters are being airlifted into inaccessible areas to battle a brush fire in rugged northeast San Diego County that has burned 2,500 acres and is threatening structures, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said Monday.
Sunrise Highway was closed and evacuations remained for several campgrounds and a lodge. There have been four reported injuries.
Evacuation orders were in place for the Horse Heaven, El Prado, Laguna and Al Bahr Shrine campgrounds, along with Foster Lodge. The Red Cross has established a center for evacuees at Joan McQueen Middle School in Alpine.
Dubbed the Chariot fire because it was first spotted Saturday near Chariot Canyon southeast of Julian, the blaze is considered 20% contained.
The fire is being fought by 1,171 firefighters and by 14 helicopters and four tankers.
