Recovery efforts were underway for four missing men presumed dead after their speedboat capsized Saturday in Folsom Lake east of Sacramento, officials said Monday.

Dive teams were using underwater robots and sonar to search for the missing Sacramento-area men, who have been identified as Toby Strauch, 54, James Strauch, 47, Jake Jacobs, 53, and Jon Smith, 48, said Vicky Waters, a spokeswoman for the California Department of Parks and Recreation.

“It’s just a very, very tragic situation,” she said, adding the incident was one of the worst seen at the lake.

Investigators were trying to determine why the 35-to-40-foot boat capsized about 1:45 p.m. Saturday in the middle of the lake near Brown’s Ravine

Witnesses reportedly saw the boat launching off Granite Bay to get to the lake, where it traveled until something happened, Waters said.

Soon after, authorities recovered the capsized boat, which she said appeared to have been in an accident.

Lake attendance was high that weekend due to warm temperatures. However, the lake was choppy, which had stopped some boaters from going out into the water, officials said.

Weather also impeded recovery efforts.

Authorities suspended their search Sunday because of low visibility and high winds with gusts reaching 30 mph.
