Shooting in LAPD Wilshire Station; officer wounded
A shooting was reported Monday night inside the Mid-City building that houses the Los Angeles Police Department’s Wilshire Division and West Traffic Bureau, leaving one officer with injuries and other victims reportedly wounded, police said.
[Updated at 9:21 p.m.: A Los Angeles police officer was wounded, apparently in the shoulder or side, and the bullet may have been stopped by the officer’s ballistic vest, authorities told The Times on Monday night.
The officer was hit after a man walked into the West Bureau traffic office and opened fire around 8 p.m., the Los Angeles Police Department said. The suspect was wounded after at least one officer returned fire.
One other person may have been wounded, Officer Sara Faden said. She said initial reports from the scene stated there were “multiple victims.”]
“There are multiple vicitms,” said Officer Sara Faden. She said it was unclear whether the victims were wounded by gunfire or fragments from shrapnel. She said there were at least two victims, but it was unclear if one was the suspect. The suspect was taken into custody.
Faden said she was unclear on the extent of the officer’s injuries. Television news footage showed the officer being transported into a ambulance as he was sitting upright.
