A man was arrested Monday on suspicion of shooting a nurse inside a mental health urgent care facility in Willowbrook, officials said.

Vincent Heard, 20, is suspected of shooting a nurse during a medical evaluation at the Exodus Foundation for Recovery Integrated Clinic in the 12000 block of Wilmington Avenue, across from Martin Luther King Jr. Community Hospital.

The nurse, a 24-year-old man whose name was not released, was taken to the hospital after he suffered a gunshot wound about 12:15 p.m., said Nicole Nishida, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. He is in stable condition.

Heard was undergoing a medical assessment when one of the nurses suspected he may have a concealed handgun.

Two unarmed hospital security guards came to assist the nurse when an altercation ensued, the sheriff’s department said in a statement. At some point during the struggle, Nishida said, the man yelled out, “I have a gun!”

Moments later, the nurse was shot in the upper thigh.

Heard, a resident of Inglewood, was booked on assault charges and is being held on $120,000 bail.
