An Oxnard man was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of cutting open a home’s window screen and sexually assaulting an 11-year-old girl, police said.

Luis Contreras, 18, was taken into custody on suspicion of burglary and forcible sexual assault on the girl, according to the Oxnard Police Department.

Police say that after entering the home in the 4300 block of Rose Avenue, Contreras placed several valuables in a bag, walked upstairs and entered the girl’s room, which she shared with her 6-year-old brother.

After assaulting the girl, police said Contreras fled and likely broke into another home where they got a call from a resident who had confronted him for allegedly stealing a cellphone.

Officers spotted Contreras, who they said matched the suspect’s description, riding a bicycle in the neighborhood.

Police are now investigating similar incidents in Oxnard over the past year.

Anyone with information about the incidents is urged to call police at (805) 385-3921.
