Southbound 5 Freeway lanes in Sun Valley to be closed until morning

Share

All southbound lanes of the 5 Freeway in the Sun Valley area, which were shut down after a fatal collision, were expected to remain closed until early Tuesday, the California Highway Patrol said.

The accident, which was near the intersection with the 170 Freeway, was cleared late Monday. But the same area was expected to be closed until 5 a.m. because of planned maintenance by state transportation crews, CHP Officer Alex Rubio said.

A victim was struck by at least one vehicle on the busy freeway about 7:40 p.m., causing a massive traffic jam on the heavily traveled transportation artery. Initial reports said that the victim was walking on the freeway, but the CHP said it had not confirmed details pertaining to the victim.

Vehicles spilled onto adjacent streets and freeways as fire engines maneuvered on the freeway.

The body was removed by coroner’s officials shortly before 10 p.m. The cause of the collision was under investigation.
