Sports camp owner charged in molestation; more possible victims sought

The owner of a Seal Beach youth sports camp was formally charged Friday with multiple felonies connected with molestation of a boy he met through one of his summer programs.

Authorities, meanwhile, said they are appealing to the public in a search for additional potential victims.

Scott Durzo, 49, of Seal Beach is accused of engaging in lewd acts with a 13-year-old boy beginning in the summer of 2005 until early 2009, the Orange County District Attorney’s office and the Seal Beach Police Department said in a joint statement.

At the time of the alleged crimes, Durzo owned and operated Scott Durzo’s Total Sports Camp. The year-round sports camp served the Seal Beach, Surfside, Rossmoor, Los Alamitos, Los Altos, Long Beach, Cypress and Huntington Beach communities.

He was also a former basketball coach at Los Alamitos High School.

Durzo is accused on one occasion of engaging in sodomy with the boy. He’s also accused of showing the 13-year-old pornography on multiple occasions, authorities said. The boy’s family reported the allegations to the Seal Beach Police Department on April 25.

Durzo was arrested Wednesday and was being held at Men’s Central Jail in Santa Ana without bail. He is expected to be arraigned Friday afternoon at West Justice Center in Westminster.

He was charged with nine felony counts of lewd acts upon a child under 14, seven felony counts of lewd acts upon a child age 14 or 15, one felony count of sodomy with a minor and one felony count of displaying pornography to a minor.

Durzo also faces a sentencing enhancement allegation in connection with substantial sexual conduct with a child. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 30 years in state prison and mandatory lifetime sex offender registration.

Prosecutors said they will request that Durzo be held on $1-million bail.
