5-year-old girl critically injured in possible street-racing crash
A 5-year-old girl was critically injured during a possible street-racing accident in Riverside, police said.
The girl was sitting in a booster seat behind her father, who was driving a 2009 Chevy Malibu on Monday when it was broadsided by a 2008 Ford Mustang that police said was possibly racing another vehicle.
The girl was rushed to Loma Linda University Hospital with critical injuries, officials said. Her father was uninjured.
Police said the crash happened just before 2 p.m. when the Malibu began turning right onto northbound Magnolia Avenue after stopping at a stop sign.
The Mustang was speeding north on Magnolia, possibly racing an orange, older-model Acura Integra or Honda Prelude when it broadsided the Malibu as it turned in front of it, police said. Magnolia Avenue is a four-lane thoroughfare that runs between residential neighborhoods in the area.
After the collision, police said, the driver of the Mustang checked on the Malibu’s passengers then ran off.
Authorities said they later discovered the Mustang had been stolen just before the crash. The driver has not been found, they said, and the car the Mustang was racing didn’t stop after the crash.
