O.C. students hospitalized after eating pot brownie
Three middle school students in Orange County were hospitalized Wednesday after eating a marijuana brownie while on campus, school officials said.
It was the second such incident in as many months at a school in Costa Mesa.
Two seventh-graders went to the front office at TeWinkle Middle School at 12:40 p.m., complaining of stomach problems, Newport-Mesa Unified School District spokeswoman Laura Boss said.
A short time later, a third seventh-grader came to the office complaining of similar symptoms, she said.
Two other students are being investigated in the incident, and the student suspected of bringing the potent brownie to school was not among those transported to the hospital, Boss said.
“Honestly,” Boss said, “this has become a police investigation because of the nature of it.”
Expulsion and suspension are possibilities for the students who brought and ate the baked good depending on whether they knew it contained marijuana, Boss said.
However, she said it remains unclear if the students were aware that the brownies contained pot.
This incident is unrelated to a similar situation at Pomona Elementary School last month when a student brought a brownie containing pot to school. Seven students, ages 10 to 12, were hospitalized in that incident and a 12-year-old student was arrested.
The district sent out a notification to parents about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, alerting them to the situation.
