Suspect identified in fatal El Sereno crash during police pursuit
A motorist accused of causing a fatal four-car crash while fleeing police has been booked on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, authorities said Sunday.
Officers attempted to stop Jose Arrellano, 20, for reckless driving Saturday afternoon when he drove off, according to officer Norma Eisenman of the Los Angeles Police Department. Police said officers briefly lost sight of his Chevy Suburban it rammed into three cars at an intersection in El Sereno.
The collision killed 23-year-old Julio Cesar Reyes-Salvador of Los Angeles, whose car was crushed from the impact. Three others were injured.
Eisenman said police found a handgun in Arrellano’s car.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department website showed a man with the same name and date of birth was arrested in February, sentenced to 150 days, then released in April. The details of that case, including the charge, were not immediately available.
Dana Bee, a deputy coroner at the L.A. County Coroner, said a preliminary investigation showed the Suburban was traveling at about 80 miles per hour at the time of impact. Reyes, who relatives said was a photography student at East L.A. College, was pronounced dead at the scene.
