Teen wielding hammer is shot by San Bernardino County deputies
Sheriff’s officials are investigating the shooting of a teenage boy in Highland by deputies who said the youth had tried to attack them, authorities in San Bernardino County said Monday.
Officers from the Highland Police Department, which is operated by the Sheriff’s Department, responded Saturday night to a call from someone saying a family member was armed and that the others in the home feared for their safety, according to a statement from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.
When deputies arrived, sheriff’s officials said the suspect -- a 16-year-old boy -- was walking away from the home. The teen turned toward the deputies, allegedly wielding a hammer and a “sharp instrument,” according to the statement.
The teen, according to officials, attempted to attack the deputies, and one of the deputies fired his weapon, hitting the youth. The teen was taken to a local hospital, where he underwent surgery. He was listed in critical condition.
None of the deputies was injured.
