Officers fire at teen armed with Tec-9 assault weapon, LAPD says

Los Angeles police shot at a teenager in the West Adams district Wednesday evening after he got out of a vehicle during a traffic stop and attempted to fire an assault weapon at them, authorities said.

No officers were injured in the shooting, which took place at 6:23 p.m. in the 1100 block of South West Boulevard, LAPD Officer Christopher No said. Police were searching for the teenager, who was wearing a baseball cap, long-sleeve gray T-shirt and dark jeans.

LAPD officers conducted a traffic stop when the driver quickly got out of his vehicle and pointed a mini-Tec 9 assault weapon at the officers and tried to fire, No said. The weapon, which is outlawed under California’s assault gun law, jammed.

Officers returned fire and the gunman took off running before ducking into a backyard. Police said it was not known if the teenager was hit in the officer-involved shooting.

The LAPD set up a perimeter for blocks around the crime scene, which they searched with dogs and a helicopter. As of 8:30 p.m., they had not located the teenager.

The incident was the second officer-involved shooting in less than 12 hours.

A robbery suspect died of wounds sustained Wednesday morning in an officer-involved shooting in the skid row area of downtown L.A., authorities said.

The shooting was reported about 9:30 a.m. near 5th and Wall streets.

Sources familiar with the case said undercover officers saw a man armed with a handgun inside the Green Apple Market in the 300 block of East 5th Street.

According to preliminary reports, the man left the market and a first round of shots was fired. The suspect ran 100 yards on 5th Street, where he encountered additional officers, leading to a second volley of gunfire by police.
