Ventura County deputies shot and killed a man armed with a knife in Thousand Oaks.
Ventura County sheriff’s deputies shot and killed a 26-year-old man armed with a knife early Wednesday while responding to a call about a single-vehicle crash in Thousand Oaks.
Deputies arrived at Hillcrest and Duesenberg drives shortly after 1:15 a.m. expecting to assist with a crash, said Sgt. Eric Buschow, a sheriff’s spokesman. However, when they approached the vehicle, they were met by a man holding a knife, he said.
Buschow said it appears the driver lost control of his car, crashed into a fence and ended up in an open area near a condominium complex before deputies arrived.
The man walked toward authorities with the knife and ignored requests to drop the weapon, Buschow said. He was struck multiple times with rounds from a beanbag-type shotgun, but he continued advancing toward deputies, he said.
“It didn’t deter him in the least,” he said. “The deputies had no choice at that point but to use lethal force.”
The man, a Thousand Oaks resident, was struck several times by gunfire. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The deputies, who were not injured, were wearing body cameras at the time, Buschow said.
Authorities have not released the man’s name.
