Any kind of political communication -- be it a mailer, a phone call, a billboard -- is required by law to identify who paid for it. But at least three signs supporting the reelection of Los Angeles City Atty.
First came a large sign affixed to a building fronting the busy I-5 where the freeway passes through LA.'s northeast communities. It showed up in January, during the city primary election. In April, another billboard, bearing the same "Re-Elect Carmen Trutanich for LA City Attorney" message as the first, sprang up at a nearby Atwater Village intersection.
The campaign for former lawmaker Mike Feuer, who is challenging Trutanich in next week's general election, objected. Feuer filed a complaint with the city Ethics Commission, which had received an earlier complaint about the first billboard from Greg Smith, one of four candidates for city attorney on the primary election ballot.
On Thursday, the Los Angeles Times received a photo of yet another sign that appears to be missing the required sponsor information. That sign, pictured above, is an electronic board affixed to the Laugh Factory building in Hollywood.
John Schwada, Trutanich spokesman, said the campaign knew nothing about the signs.
Feuer campaign spokesman Dave Jacobson previously pointed to the "hyprocrisy" of the pro-Trutanich billboard, knowing that the city attorney made cracking down on illegal billboards a priority of his office.
