Officers look for attackers who shot 2 people on 91 Freeway

Officers were looking for at least one gunman and another person involved in a shooting Thursday night that left two victims wounded on the 91 Freeway near Bellflower Boulevard.

One of the victims was in critical condition and the other was hit in the elbow in the shooting, which has snarled traffic on the westbound lanes, the California Highway Patrol said.

The CHP said it received an initial report of two people running across the freeway as one of them fired toward vehicles.

But the agency said officers at the scene were trying to piece together what transpired and were also investigating whether the attackers opened fire from a vehicle.

A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department patrol car was involved in a crash near the shooting scene, but it was not immediately clear whether that incident was connected to the shooting.

A SigAlert was declared on the busy freeway shortly before 9 p.m. as officers shut down lanes while investigators gathered evidence. Traffic was backed up for several miles, according to television news footage.

The two victims were taken to a local hospital, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
