Veterans Day celebrated with events across Southern California

Dozens of events commemorating Veterans Day are scheduled across Southern California today.

Also, The Times has compiled a database of California’s war dead from Iraq and Afghanistan. Readers can examine the fallens’ biographies and offer comments.

Here is a selection of the events on tap, compiled by City News Service.

10 a.m. -- Pasadena’s annual Veterans Day ceremony. Scheduled speakers include Mayor Bill Bogaard and county Sheriff Lee Baca. The invocation will be given by retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. (Rabbi) Gilbert Kollin of Pasadena Jewish Temple. The event concludes with a fly-over by a squadron of World War II-era Condor planes at about 11:11 a.m. City Hall’s Centennial Square, 100 N. Garfield Ave.

10 a.m. -- The city of Commerce will host its annual Veterans Day ceremony. The program includes a procession, music, guest speakers and a Marine Corps military vehicle static display. Veterans Memorial Park, 6364 Zindell Ave.

10 a.m. -- In Costa Mesa, a veterans and labor community Veterans Day celebration will include music, art projects to create thank you’ gifts for veterans, historical military vehicles and music performances. OC Fair and Event Center, 88 Fair Drive

10 a.m. -- East Los Angeles will hold the Cinco Puntos Veterans Day ceremony. All Wars Memorial Cinco Puntos (Five Points), 3300 E. Cesar Chavez Ave.

11 a.m. -- Eagle Rock hosts the Northeast L.A. Veterans Day Solemn Ceremony. Veterans Memorial Statue, Eagle Rock City Hall, 2035 Colorado Blvd.

11 a.m. -- West Hollywood will honor military personnel at the Sal Guarriello Veterans’ Memorial, Corner of Santa Monica Boulevard and Holloway Drive.

11 a.m. -- The Dodgers will host about 100 members of the Armed Forces for batting practice.

11 a.m. -- Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti will be the grand marshal for the 2013 San Fernando Valley Veterans Day Parade. A squadron of World War II-era Condor planes from the Van Nuys airbase will fly over the parade route at about
11:25 a.m. The parade begins at 11:11 a.m. at the corner of Laurel Canyon and San Fernando Mission boulevards and ends with an information fair at Ritchie Valens Recreation Center and Park, 10736 Laurel Canyon Blvd.
