2 shootings in South L.A. leave 1 dead, 4 injured

Two shootings in South Los Angeles on Wednesday afternoon left one man dead and four people injured, authorities said.

The first shooting occurred about 12:30 p.m. near 88th Street and Vermont Avenue in the Westmont neighborhood, said Los Angeles County sheriff’s Deputy Ryan Rouzan.

A man who was approximately 25 years old was killed and three others were wounded by gunfire, Rouzan said.

The three injured victims were taken to the hospital. At least two of the victims were in critical condition, according to Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Margaret Stewart.

It was unclear whether any arrests had been made and detectives are investigating whether the shooting was connected to gang activity.

The second shooting occurred about 16 blocks away in the 2000 block of 83rd Street in the Manchester Square neighborhood, said LAPD Officer Drake Madison.

About 1:50 p.m., a male believed to be in his 20s hopped out of a white Lexus and shot another man, Madison said. The victim was conscious and breathing when he was taken to the hospital.

It’s unclear if the pair of shootings were connected.

In the last 12 months, 13 people have been killed in Westmont, according to the L.A. Times Homicide Report. Eight were shot to death.

During the same time period, five people have been killed in Manchester Square, according to the Homicide Report. All five were shot to death.
