Dog left in van in blistering heat in Riverside; woman cited
A woman was cited in Riverside County for allegedly leaving her 3-month-old puppy inside a van amid blistering heat, officials said Thursday evening.
The female poodle mix was rescued by an animal services officer who forced open one of the van doors in a Wal-Mart parking lot in Riverside, according to officials.
The windows inside the van were cracked, but “it was still too hot for that little dog,” Officer Will Luna said.
The temperature in Riverside on Thursday hit 101 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.
The dog, named Sheri, was rushed to an animal shelter in Jurupa Valley, where her temperature was 103.7 degrees, the Riverside County Department of Animal Services said.
The dog was stabilized and returned to its owner.
“Since the dog did not die,” department officials said in a statement, “the woman was cited for leaving a pet inside a car unattended.”
Officials said the citation is $124.
