Police use iPad to find woman trapped overnight in ravine

Share

A police officer used an iPad to track down a 28-year-old woman who was trapped overnight after her car rolled hundreds of feet down an embankment just east of San Jose, police said.

The woman’s stepmother reported her missing about 3 a.m. Tuesday after she never came home, Campbell Police Capt. Gary Berg said.

They tried reaching the woman through her cellphone provider and vehicle security OnStar -- which had issued a distress call -- but didn’t have much luck. Police said the OnStar gave the wrong address.

Determined to find the woman, an officer obtained her iPad and was able to guess her password.

He used the device’s “Find my iPhone” app to pinpoint the woman’s location -- at the bottom of a ravine.

“I am amazed that occurred,” Berg said. “I hate to think what the outcome would have been.”

She was rescued by a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter Tuesday and taken to an hospital to be treated for injuries suffered during the accident.
