Woman killed in apparent street race
A 24-year-old woman was killed and six other people injured when a driver believed to have been involved in a street race ran a red light and struck two cars, the California Highway Patrol said.
Michael Villalobos was driving a 2003 Acura just after midnight Saturday when he failed to stop for the light at Firestone Boulevard and Alameda Street in South Gate, the CHP said in a news release.
Villalobos’ car broadsided a 1997 Honda in the intersection, the CHP said. The 24-year-old driver of that car, whom the CHP did not identify, died at Saint Francis Medical Center.
Villalobos’ car struck another vehicle, resulting in major injuries to the 50-year-old woman driving the car and minor injuries to her passengers, ages 15 and 16, the CHP said.
Two of Viallabos’ passengers, ages 17 and 21, were also taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
Villalobos, who a CHP spokesperson said was in his early 20s, was arrested on suspicion of being involved in a “speed contest,” reckless driving and vehicular manslaughter.
