A music industry veteran remained hospitalized Monday, a day after his girlfriend’s former husband allegedly attacked the two with a machete and a scalpel.

Police said the incident began about 8 a.m. Sunday in the 4700 block of Nomad Drive in Woodland Hills, where Jerry Sharell -- who is host of a show on KJAZZ-FM (88.1) -- was visiting his girlfriend.

As the two were inside, the girlfriend’s former husband pulled up to the house on his motorcycle, KABC-TV Channel 7 reported.

The ex-husband -- whom police have not identified -- was carrying a machete, scalpel and a bouquet of roses, according to multiple media reports. The man held the woman and Sharell hostage over the next several hours, during which he allegedly stabbed Sharell several times, including in the neck, KNBC-TV Channel 4 reported.

The man then turned the weapon on himself, police said.

“He asked his ex-wife to watch as he killed himself,” Sgt. Jeff Nuttall told KCBS-TV Channel 2.

It was about that time that the woman managed to escape and called police, who rescued the pair and took the attacker into custody. Sharell underwent surgery and is expected to survive, KNBC reported. The suspect was also hospitalized.

There have been 63 violent crimes in Woodland Hills in the last six months and 10 homicides since 2007, according to the L.A. Times crime mapping database.
