A three-day event that begins Friday at Van Nuys Airport hopes to fly more than 400 animals that were living at shelters to new homes outside California. This is Wings of Rescue’s 3rd Annual Holiday Airlift, which saves hundreds of animals from shelters in Southern California to avoid euthanizing them, said Rene Ruston, a co-founder of the animal rescue and transportation organization START.

Volunteer pilots in private planes will fly the animals to rescue organizations and new homes in Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana. This is the largest one-day animal rescue on the West Coast.
