Mike Kelley was an influential Los Angeles contemporary artist whose physically messy and psychologically complex projects laid the groundwork for present-day installation art. He was 57. Los Angeles Times art critic Christopher Knight called Kelley's recent efforts "a finger-lickin' good body of work" where "Sigmund Freud meets Scheherazade in the Fortress of Solitude."
