Assemblyman Morrell plans run for senate seat
SACRAMENTO -- Assemblyman Mike Morrell (R-Rancho Cucamonga) on Monday became the first to announce a candidacy for the Senate seat from which Bill Emmerson is resigning effective Dec. 1.
Emmerson, a Republican from Redlands, abruptly announced Friday that he is quitting because his passion for the job has waned.
Emmerson just won reelection to a four-year term last November, so Gov. Jerry Brown will have to call a special election to fill the Senate seat.
Morrell, 61, was a real estate broker before he was elected to the Assembly in 2010. He was r-elected last year and is vice chairman of both the Assembly Banking and Finance Committee and the Labor and Employment Committee.
“He’s in with both feet,” said campaign spokesman Duane Dichiara. “Assemblyman Morrell has represented about half of the Senate district and he’s a good fit for the new district.”
On Monday, the campaign announced endorsements from the mayors of Highland, Loma Linda and Rancho Cucamonga.
