Republican Susan Shelley seeks recount in Assembly race
SACRAMENTO -- Republican Assembly candidate Susan Shelley said Monday that she is asking for a recount of the Nov. 19 election results that gave Democrat Matt Dababneh a victory by 329 votes out of more than 29,000 cast in a district largely in the San Fernando Valley.
Shelley, a Woodland Hills author/publisher, said her preliminary examination of the election results with the help of the nonpartisan Election Integrity Project showed 206 more votes counted in Los Angeles County than were available to count for the 45th Assembly District.
“I have asked officials at the county registrar/recorder’s office for an explanation of these numbers,” the 54-year-old candidate said in a statement. “They have been very helpful, however, questions still remain.”
The deadline for requesting a recount was 5 p.m. Monday. “At this time, I believe the discrepancy may be an indication of errors in the count,” she said. “It may be that these questions will be cleared up quickly, but in an abundance of caution, I have asked for a recount.”
Dababneh, 32, is a chief deputy to U.S. Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Sherman Oaks) and lives in Encino.
If the election results stand, Dababneh will restore a Democratic supermajority in the lower house.
