Big surprise for regulars at Paolo's Italian Restaurant in Northampton. Two readers contacted Retail Watch today to let us know they were shocked with news that it has closed.
Several weeks ago, reader Tony Karam of Northampton booked an 85th birthday party for his mother-in-law at the 2418 Cherryville Road restaurant -- her favorite dining spot, he said.
Today, Tony received a call from someone at the restaurant telling him they had to cancel the Saturday party because the restaurant is "closed until further nortice."
A few hours later, Retail Watch received an email from reader Barbara Edwards of Allentown. She and her husband planned to have lunch at Paolo's today and were disappointed to find a "Closed until further notice" sign on the door.
"This is one of our favorite restaurants. Can you find out if they plan to open again soon?," asked Barbara.
Retail Watch is trying to find out, Barbara. But, so far, it does't look good. A coworker heard from an employee at Family Dollar Store, located in the same shopping strip as Paolo's, that restaurant did, indeed, close today. Employees, she said, were notified this morning that it is closing for good. And she watched as merchadise was taken from the restaurant and loaded on a truck.
Retail Watch still has not been able to reach chef owner, Bob Sweeney, or restaurant manager Nichole Khalil, for confirmation of this information but will continue to try.
Sweeney purchased the restaurant and its name from original owner Paulo Nota more than two years ago. He previously was sous chef at the Northampton restaurant. The change of ownership didn't seem to affect business, according to regulars like Tony and Barbara.
In November, Nota opened another restaurant, A Ca Mia, at 4330 Lehigh Drive in Lehigh Towne Center in Walnutport.
