"What's a great bar/club to attend for a New Year's bash?" -Amy
Even though we're still thinking Thanksgiving Eve, we know the hyper-organized among us are already planning NYE, so here are a few bashes worth looking into. The Ninth Annual New Year's Eve Rock 'n' Roll Ball at Navy Pier Grand Ballroom is sure to be a sell-out, with bands Fountains of Wayne, The Redwalls and more, plus food and drink, and midnight fireworks. Or get an open bar, buffet, champagne and more at Wrigleyville hang Casey Moran's. See our Holiday Guide at metromix.com for more ideas.
"Is there a bar runners go to?" -Britt
Britt, we don't run ourselves (we get bored), but we do know an irreverent bunch who likes to mix cardio with cocktails. The Hash House Harriers usually meet at a bar at 2 p.m. Sundays (October through April)-this past weekend, it was O'Lanagan's-and embark on a zany route. The self-professed "drinking club with a running problem" has a Hash Line you can call for details: 312-409-2337.
"I'm looking for a bar with a private room to host a couples shower for [about] 50 people. Any good ideas?" -Samantha
Let us say from experience that showers are uncomfortable enough. No one in her right mind enjoys watching someone open up box after box of kitchen utensils. If, however, you're just looking to invite the guys and gals out to toast the couple's happy day, check out the party room and bar packages at Black Duck Tavern and Grill, or seating areas at Mystic Celt and The Tasting Room. Read "Where's the Party?" at metromix.com for more suggestions.
"I'm 20 and my boyfriend is 23. We can never find anything to do because he wants to have a couple beers and I can't get in. ... Any ideas?" -Annette
We could suggest coffeehouse poetry readings or the ho-hum hookah bar, but how about a concert? Many clubs host 18-and-over shows and give wristbands to those of age, but not-yet-legals can still get in. Check our online music listings or Pages 38, 42 and 44 for Metro, Abbey Pub and Schubas. Now you just have to decide who to see.
"Any idea when the new Checkerboard is going to open in Hyde Park?" -JL
Well, JL, you're in luck. The grand opening for the New Checkerboard Lounge for Blues 'n' Jazz will be held Friday-Sunday at the legendary hang's new location. Starting at 9:30 p.m. Friday, you can hear Malachi Thompson & the Africa Brass JAAZ Orchestra and more. The spot aims to keep the historic feel of the original, where B.B. King and The Rolling Stones once graced the stage.
