Fast-Paised review: ‘Mission: Impossible III'

EntertainmentMoviesTom CruiseBilly CrudupMaggie QLaurence FishburneMichelle Monaghan

Big question: Agent Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) is in love with Julia (Michelle Monaghan), but before they can settle down, he must track a villain (Philip Seymour Hoffman) pursuing a mysterious "rabbit's foot." Does the latest "M:I" deliver more than the same old gunfire and explosions?

Catch it: "Mission: Impossible III" kicks off the summer movie season with a bang, re-igniting the action genre with spectacular stunts and--believe it or not--a comprehensible plot. In his feature debut, co-writer/director J.J. Abrams ("Lost," "Alias") makes his presence felt in every scene, from the exhilarating chase sequences to the intimacy of Ethan and Julia's relationship.

Skip it if: You can no longer believe any of Cruise's emotions unless he's jumping on a couch.

Bottom line: From start to finish, "M:I:III" is a thrilling, crackling fuse ready to blow. It's the way sequels should be: strong casting (including Laurence Fishburne, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Billy Crudup, Maggie Q and Simon Pegg), breathless excitement, and characters with families and personality to remind us that, yes, action heroes are people, too.

Bonus: Stunning, "oh, it was just a mask" revelations are kept to a minimum, and--even better--we finally get to find out how those flawless masks are made!
