Dirty Sexy Money

Taking the prize for most compelling adjective of ABC’s new line-up (or, in this case, adjectives, plural) is “Dirty Sexy Money.” And just like “Ugly Betty” and “Desperate Housewives” (OK, and “America’s Funniest Home Videos,” if you really want to go there) before it, we’re betting that this descriptively titled drama will be a smash hit as well.

Nick George grew up resenting his father and the insanely wealthy family his dad devoted his life’s work to, the Darlings. Now, all grown up and a do-good lawyer, Nick is trying to be a better husband and father than his dad ever was. Until the day his dad mysteriously dies, that is. Whisked back up in the Darling family drama, Nick steps right into the job he swore he’d never even consider: managing one of the most tabloid-tracked, scene-stealing, ridiculously self-important families in New York. But it’s not all about getting some of that titular money…he plans on getting to the bottom of how his father died too. Who’s that?: This cast is as star-studded as it gets. “Six Feet Under” alum Peter Krause stars as Nick George, Donald Sutherland plays Tripp Darling and Jill Clayburgh plays his wife Letitia. The Darling brood also includes William Baldwin as politico Patrick; Natalie Zea as socialite/arm candy Karen; Glenn Fitzgerald as Reverend Brian; Samaire Armstrong as the Paris Hilton-esque Juliet and Seth Gabel as her twin, Jeremy.

Buzzed about: Blair Underwood will be gracing yet another lucky TV show, joining the cast a few episodes in as the secretive billionaire Simon Elder. The addition ups the “Sexy” quotient quite a bit, but also saves this white-bred cast from alienating a huge chunk of the viewing population that feels there are enough pasty people to watch on the small screen as it is. The “ooh” factor: With so many stars and an abundance of intriguing characters to follow, it’s fun to watch even if you’re not a fan of one-hour dramas. And with so many soap-y schemes, twists and turns, what’s not to love? The “eh” factor: What is ABC’s obsession with transvestites? There’s Alex/Alexis on “Ugly Betty,” you’ll meet Dontrelle on tomorrow night’s “Big Shots” (if you dare) and Carmelita (played by Candis Cayne, Miss Gay Continental USA of 2001) plays Patrick Darling’s deep-voiced fling on the side here. Note to network heads: At this point, it’s now losing in both the originality and diversity appreciation categories.

The verdict: Love the dirty. Love the sexy. Love the money.

“Dirty Sexy Money” premieres Wednesday, Sept. 26 at 10 p.m./9c on ABC.
