EPCOT Center, a theme park in the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, opened on Oct. 1, 1982. Walt Disney had originally envisioned EPCOT, which stands for Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow, as a futuristic city with thousands of residents. But Disney dropped that plan and instead created a theme park with two distinct sections: Future World and World Showcase. In 1996, the name of the park was changed to just Epcot. The park receives millions of visitors each year.
