Readers React: What a license should look like
State Sen. Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) and Assemblyman Luis Alejo (D-Watsonville) imply that the proposed design of a driver’s license for illegal immigrants was made to look very similar to California licenses issued to those here legally to provide protection against discrimination, which would occur with a different-looking document. (“California design of driver’s license for immigrants rejected,” May 6)
A design noticeably different from existing licenses will not cause any more discrimination than what occurs now when an illegal immigrant is asked to present a license and has none to present. In both instances, the illegal immigrant is identified as being here illegally.
Perhaps Lara and Alejo should go back to the drawing board to design a different justification.
