"August: Osage County" has its six Oscar winners and nominees (oooh), its basis in a Pulitzer- and Tony-winning stage production (aaah), its Academy Awards dreams (gasp) and its reviews (blah). The movie opens wide in theaters Friday.
The film was initially set to go wide on Dec. 25 amid holiday hoopla, but the Weinstein Co. reportedly pulled it back. Meantime, "August" the film (as opposed to the play, which scooped up five Tonys) has a 58 out of 100 on Metacritic.
Will you see it?
Fans of some of its award winners/nominees (Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep, Sam Shepard, Chris Cooper, Juliette Lewis and Abigail Breslin) might take the risk. Each of the film's actors has his or her "virtuoso" moment, wrote L.A. Times reviewer Kenneth Turan. But he concluded that the film is uninvolving and disappointing.
