David Ortiz nowhere close to being voted mayor of Boston
You can’t say David Ortiz fans didn’t try.
The Red Sox first baseman -- Señor Octubre, Cooperstown, Big Papi – flirted with adding a new name to his list: Mr. Mayor.
It was initially reported that the longest-tenured Red Sox player officially came in third in the Boston mayoral election after receiving the highest number of write-in votes. But we don’t know for sure where Ortiz ranked.
Election officials told the Associated Press they only counted votes for declared write-in candidates. Ortiz wasn’t one of them, so the exact number of write-in votes he received was unclear.
But after hitting 11 for 16 (to come up with a .688 batting average) in the World Series, who could blame Bostonians for wanting more?
Don’t feel too bad for Ortiz. He did walk away with the title of MVP, after all.
In case you were wondering, state Sen. Martin J. Walsh officially won the title of Boston Mayor with 72,514 votes. The most Ortiz could have won was 560.
Perhaps Mayor-elect Walsh will share his title if Ortiz shares his.
