Kurt Cobain: April 5, 1994

Pop culture passing : Cobain, 27, was found in his Seattle home with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head (although some still suspect murder) and a note to his wife, Courtney Love, and his daughter, Frances Bean, lying next to him. State of unrest: One third of Cobain's ashes were spread along the Wishkah River, a Washington waterway he wrote about in "Something in the Way." Love held onto the rest of the ashes in a pink teddy bear-shaped bag with a lock of his hair, until the sack was stolen in 2008. In a strange twist, a Berlin-based artist named Natascha Stellmach made headlines a few months later when she claimed to be in possession of the remains and was planning to smoke them as part of an art exhibit.
