Suspect in custody, weapons found after Connecticut campus scare

For the second time in two weeks, a Connecticut university has been put on lockdown after officials received an alert about a possible gunman coming to campus.

University of New Haven officials said Tuesday that a suspect was in custody and weapons had been recovered after the campus was told to take shelter in the early afternoon.

“EMERGENCY: WHPD has reported an Asian male near South Campus with what appears to be a rifle,” the school’s official account tweeted. “SHELTER IN PLACE and await further instruction.”

Building-to-building searches by West Haven, Conn., police continued even after officials announced that a suspect was in custody, with the school adding that there was no indication of additional suspects.

Sgt. David Tammaro told the New Haven Register that the suspect was a student who lived off-campus and who was carrying two hanguns when he was arrested, but police have not found a rifle yet. “We’re still looking for that right now,” Tammaro told the newspaper.

Fairfield police told the Register that the student had a valid pistol permit.

Classes were canceled for the rest of the day and the evening. Parts of the campus remained on lockdown more than three hours after the alert.

“Welcome to gun wavin’ New Haven,” one student tweeted after a SWAT team arrived at her chemistry lecture.

The lockdown came a little more than a week after Yale University, about two miles away in New Haven, was similarly shut down after officials received a cryptic phone call warning of an impending attack.

No suspect was found in that case, and officials deemed the Yale call a malicious hoax.

New Haven is about 25 miles from Newtown, Conn., where Adam Lanza killed 26 children and adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School last December.
