Northern lights illuminate skies in awesome night show
A burst of solar activity, including two large flares, turned parts of the sky into a light show known as the northern lights, or aurora borealis.
The celestial phenomenon comes when coronal mass ejections spew from the sun and head to Earth. It then interacts with the Earth's magnetic field, creating an enhanced aurora around the planet's poles. The charged gases give off light from green to orange to red depending on the type of gas being excited by the charged solar particles.
