Eagles-Lions #SnowBowl is a nutty matchup amid a blizzard

Share

It was crazy. The Philadelphia Eagles and Detroit Lions played in what looked at times like whiteout conditions in Philadelphia on Sunday. It was dubbed #SnowBowl on Twitter, where pictures of frigid fans and chilly cheerleaders were shared.

Does L.A. have fans like that? Perhaps that’s why we have no football team. Angelenos were huddling in their coats Sunday, saying, “It’s supposed to be under 50 today!” Meanwhile, lion-hearted Eagles fans and eagle-eyed Lions fans were lined up in the stands like so many ski moguls, the white stuff piling up on hats and shoulders.

Sports Illustrated said the game referee had to explain the contingency plan for the coin toss -- “in case the coin landed sideways in a snow pile.”

The Associated Press reported that with temperatures in the 20s, there were plenty of open seats, emphasizing the bravery (idiocy?) of those who did face the elements. The snow was so thick, fans in Philadelphia couldn’t really tell exactly where the ball was. The players at least had heaters on the sidelines.

Out for the game was Detroit running back Reggie Bush, who slipped and fell during warm-ups and didn’t play.

The Eagles tweeted about the difficulty in pinpointing the goal line:

“We’re going to stop the game for a moment to see the goal line. We can’t see the goal line.” #SnowBowl— Philadelphia Eagles (@Eagles) December 8, 2013

Other games affected by the winter weather were Vikings at Ravens, Chiefs at Redskins, and Dolphins at Steelers, according to AP.

The Eagles won their winter battle, beating the Lions 34-20.
