Hell freezes over

Seinfeld (tv program)NPR

Thursday morning, about 10 a.m., it was 6 degrees Fahrenheit in Hell. You would think it would be much hotter.

But Hell, Mich., freezes over regularly. With the polar vortex bringing frigid temperatures to the East, Midwest and even down South, the Hell-ish cold drew attention -- if only for the opportunity to write that headline.

As NPR reported, headline writers couldn't contain their glee, and Hell freezing over appeared thousands of times in a recent Google search. Meanwhile, Michigan Radio wryly noted: "World notices that a) it's cold, and b) Michigan has a city named Hell."

Given its location, freezing cold is nothing new to Hell. But it's been really, really cold. For parts of Michigan, the polar vortex brought record-breaking temperatures -- the coldest air in two decades, according to the Detroit Free Press.

On Facebook, Hell posted a city sign coated in icicles.

Good news: A Friday forecast shows Hell may ascend above the freezing point: 36 degrees. Woo. Hoo.
