The 2014 Olympics have thrown a spotlight on Russia’s stand on homosexuality, as well as other issues of morality and human rights. The nation’s anti-gay legislation has spurred widespread protests. Western leaders -- President Obama, British Prime Minister David Cameron, French President Francois Hollande -- pointedly took a stand on Russia’s human rights record by skipping the Olympic opening ceremony.
But President Vladimir Putin maintains that Russia’s worldview is morally superior. In his address on the state of the nation, Putin took a swipe at America and its values, which he said were nontraditional.
