Why did you start a pet business?
A. Dean Johnson: My wife and I have always been animal lovers. We decided to combine that love with a business. We wanted to serve our community by helping animals and their owners.
What products do you offer?
A. We are a full-line retail pet store. We offer products for dogs, cats, fish, hamsters, guinea pigs, birds and reptiles. We offer all the supplies needed to take care of them: food, bedding, cages, toys, treats, health care and grooming.
Additionally, our store sells some live animals: freshwater fish, hamsters, guinea pigs, gerbils, parakeets, cockatiels and finches. We also have hermit crabs and leopard geckos.
We do not sell dogs or cats. We promote the Aberdeen Area Humane Society so that dogs and cats without a home can find one.
Tell us about your pet grooming service?
A. We have had a full-time groomer for about one year now. Jo Lynn Lefor came to us from Bismarck, N.D., where she had 12 years of experience in pet grooming.
Her services include bathing, brushing, haircuts, ear cleaning and nail trimming. She can do any size dog and any style coat. The haircut can be stylized. A poodle can get a poodle cut if the owner so desires.
Grooming is Tuesdays through Saturdays by appointment.
What's new at your place?
A. We are excited about our newest service: the Brush and Bath Club. For a monthly fee, dogs can have unlimited brushing and baths by appointment.
This is a great service for those who don't have the time to regularly brush their dog or who want to reduce the amount of dog hair around their house. Members receive a discount on other grooming services, such as haircuts.
What is your favorite pet?
A. I like all animals and enjoy taking care of them here in the store. But if I had to pick one type, it would be dogs. Their unconditional love is hard to beat.
What are you most proud of?
A. That we are still in business with new customers coming in every day. It is well known that the first years of any new business are the most difficult. In March, the Pet Place will celebrate its third anniversary. We are very proud that we are still here and still growing.
What's the greatest compliment your
business has ever received?
A. Our greatest compliment is a repeat customer. When customers trust products and services enough to keep coming back, it is the greatest compliment a retailer can receive. I thank all of our customers for allowing us to serve them.
Goals for the future?
A. Over the next year, we plan to sell a larger variety of live animals. We do some community service, such as the pet micro-chipping day we had this summer and the monthly Aberdeen Area Humane Society meet and greets. We would like to do more.
