Shoreview, Minn.: Born Sept. 11, 1946, in Aberdeen. Died Dec. 25, 2010, from injuries suffered in a fall. John, 64, lived a full life - a life full of love for family, education, and athletics. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Groton.
He grew up on a farm by Groton and graduated from Groton High School in 1964. John had a passion for education, shown by his lifelong learning and a lifetime of teaching.
He attended Concordia College, St. Paul, Minn., graduating with an Associate of Arts Degree (1964-1966); Concordia Senior College (1966-1967); Concordia College River Forest, Ill., graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree (1967-1969); coached and taught at Concordia College, St. Paul, where he met Marletta (1969-1972); received a Master's degree in physical education from the University of Minnesota (1971); received a doctorate in health education from the University of Northern Colorado (1983).
John's learning was certainly passed on through his years of teaching, coaching and leading.
John taught at the University of Wyoming-Laramie, Wyo. (1972-1984); Texas Tech University-Lubbock, Texas (1984-1986); Bethel College-St. Paul (1986-2008); Department Chair of Health and Human Performance at St. Thomas University (2008-2010); member of the Minneapolis Officials' Association (1986-2010); officiated high school and college basketball and high school football; member of South Central Health Association; co-founder and co-director of Minnesota State Health Educator's Conference; authored numerous articles for publication and co-authored two books on health teaching.
He was a member of King of Kings Lutheran in Roseville, Minn. There he served on the Board of Lay Ministry, led and participated in Bible studies, and played trumpet in the worship band and for special services.
John married Marletta (Stahn) July 15, 1972, in Trimont, Minn.
John is survived by wife, Marletta; sons, Brant (Kim) and Jared (Megan); grandchildren, Brielle, Olivia and Lincoln; mother, Annabeth Rohwer; sisters, Joan (Allan) Weismantel, Judy (John) Windorski, Janet (Merle) Harder; brother-in-law, Jerry Krueger; nieces; nephews; and cousins. Preceded in death by father Lawrence; mother and father-in-law, Merlin and Margarieth Stahn; nieces, Susan Weismantel and Shawn Weismantel (Kramer); sister-in-law, Mary Ann Krueger.
Visitation will be 3-6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 29 at King of Kings Lutheran in Roseville, Minn. Memorial service following at the church at 6:30 p.m.
