The city of Aberdeen is hoping a department of transportation grant may help with future trail development.
The Aberdeen City Council gave Doug Johnson, parks and recreation director, its approval Tuesday to apply for the South Dakota Department of Transportation enhancement funds. If approved, the grant would provide funding for new trails along Roosevelt Street between Milwaukee Avenue Northeast and Eighth Avenue Northeast and along 15th Avenue Northeast between Northview Lane and Roosevelt Street.
The total cost is estimated at about $400,000. The city's share - at a minimum 18 percent match - would be about $72,000.
The money would not be available until 2012, Johnson said. The city's share of the expense would be allocated from the second penny sales tax fund.
The Aberdeen City Council meeting on Feb. 22 has been canceled.
The council voted to cancel its regular weekly meeting so that its members could attend Aberdeen Day at the Capitol in Pierre. Several City Council members had indicated that they would be absent.
