Rides at Storybook Land will cost a little more this year.
Doug Johnson, Aberdeen's park and recreation director, said the price for a single carousel, train or balloon ride will increase from $1.50 to $1.75. A 10-ride punch ride will rise from $12 to $14.
The Aberdeen Parks, Recreation and Forestry board approved the increase this week at its meeting. The Sertoma Club, which funds many projects and activities at Storybook Land, had previously approved the ticket increase as well.
The money will go toward offsetting costs for the Sertoma Club at the park, including increased costs of maintenance at the new tourism center.
The prices for the rides last increased in 2007, Johnson said.
"Our costs are constantly rising," said Bob Gruman of the Sertoma Club. " ... We feel very comfortable (that the price increase) isn't going to affect the bottom line. Hopefully, it raises it; it doesn't reduce it."
Department wins award: The Aberdeen Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department recently was awarded the George S. Mickelson Great Service Award for its customer service program at Wylie Park.
The award honors a business or organization that has done an exemplary job of exceeding visitor expectations in customer service.
Johnson said, for about 10 years, Wylie Park has worked under a customer service program through the tourism department. The department earned the award by meeting certain criteria, he said.
"It's quite a program to be involved with," Johnson said. "It really helped us focus on hospitality and customer service."
Aberdeen Mayor Mike Levsen congratulated all the people associated with the honor.
"It was just really nice to have our people recognized," he said. " ... I don't think the people in the city realize the quality of employees we have here in Aberdeen."
