Other cities around the country have allowed a creative community to develop in their downtown areas, Jason Hepola of Aberdeen said. In those communities, musicians and artists “will turn around and sustain those businesses down the road,” said Hepola, who's putting together Music on Main.
The entertainment lineup has been announced for the one-day art and music festival, which will take place on one block of Main Street. Three groups from the Twin Cities will perform: Tree Party, Dred I Dread and Carnage & Desdamona. Local bands performing will be Pops Blue Rhythm, SoulDrive and Gonzo 5. Also on hand will be DJ Rad Jackson, Will Brown, Shub Rock and Tanner Cruse.
Music on Main will run from 1:15 p.m. to midnight on Main Street between First and Second Avenues Southeast. No east-west streets will be blocked off. Admission will be free.
So far, Hepola has lined up 10 sponsors for the event. Those sponsors are paying for the music acts and other expenses. In most cases, the sponsors are “literally writing the checks directly to the bands,” Hepola said. Music on Main has a budget of just less than $3,000, Hepola said. The budget includes the cost of two Aberdeen police officers to act as security.
No beer will be sold on Main Street that day. “If you want a beer, you'll have to go and support one of the businesses downtown,” said Hepola, who owns Gallery Go on Main and Mattress Matters.
There will also be no food vendors from outside the downtown area. Patrons will use the restrooms in downtown businesses.
Music on Main will be the day after Rockfest, a separate event which will be held in Central Park.
Tree Party, Dred I Dred and Carnage & Desdamona all have played in Aberdeen several times.
Tree Party, a roots country band, has four members. Hepola said singer Jenna Wyse sings like Patsy Cline and bandmate Joey Ford is reminiscent of Hank Williams Sr.
Carnage, whose real name is Terrell Woods, is an “old-school beatboxer,” Hepola said. Desdamona is a freestyle poet who performs with Carnage.
Dred I Dread is a reggae band.
So far, the Music on Main sponsors are Wild Oats Sports Bar and Grill, Pauer Sound and Music, Red Rooster Coffee House, Comfort Inn, the Tom and Danielle Aman Foundation, Natural Abundance, Gallery Go on Main and Mattress Matters, Slackers, Malchow's and Engel Music.
